today's earworm is performed by a group that originated as

a "surrealist street theater troupe" in 1972 and was still performing in that style when it won an episode of "The Gong Show" in 1976. That same year the group's founder left to pursue other interests and handed the reins over to his brother, who several years later transformed it into a new wave/pop band and shortened its name into what it would become known as during its heyday in the 1980s. The brother eventually left the group and became much more well-known in his follow-up career.
