We just returned from putting him down. Bodie's herniated disc never showed the sustained improvement from the medications we'd started him on April 10th - that only stood at best a 50-50 chance of success. While there were times this past week or so he'd get up and strut his stuff to eat or go out, those occasions became less frequent. Since yesterday, though, we were faced with bringing him to an upright stance on all four legs five or six times daily with both chest and hind end harnesses, but his hind feet barely touched the ground, he was so hobbled, and his paws were knuckling under. An 85lb polar bear of a Labbie, he was a real behemoth to lift and get moving. His was a dedicated life of patrolling our yards and our home to ward off invaders, and as he heads off to the Bridge this evening to join our Mokie, Sommer Lynn, Valero Bob, Big Marge and Gunner - our prior Labbies - go give your companion a hug for us. Bodie had previously been in the care of an elderly man, who raised him as "Buddy", which was his adopted name. We'd previously had a really annoying neighbor in the CLT named that, so we renamed him Bodie.
