Just got around to watching Godzilla -1, which I thought was very good. Liked that they took a different angle, showing us post WWIII Japan more than Godzilla. Anyway, in that film, Godzilla is clearly a villain. I don't know why he has chosen to come ashore now and then to destroy stuff, and the movie doesn't explain why except for a ransom comment about "territory." In any case, there is no attempt to portray Godzilla as anything but a monster. And yet, in so many other Godzilla movies, Godzilla is a savior. In some, he practically works for the Japanese people. Just recently, in an Americanish Godzilla, G and King Kong team up to take out a different bad guy, and then peacefully go their separate ways. So is Godzilla good or bad for humanity? Should I root for him or not? It's confusing.
