Mixed feelings. I want to refer to it as 'aggressively...fine.' I think it set out what it was trying to accomplish. The only question from me - was that the right target? Oz Perkins has a track record as a writer-director so you pretty much know what you'll get if you see one of his films - lots of well-framed static shots, creepy sounds, weird performances. Problem is, modern horror audiences are notoriously impatient. Right now the audience response for this is 'just north of mediocre.' Modern horror audiences want their gore and jump scares. Longlegs has neither. What it DOES have is an ever mounting sense of dread, great cinematography (if you can tolerate lots of dark), eerie sound design and sharply contrasting performances from Maika Monroe and Nick Cage. Some memorable set pieces, some puzzling set pieces. At times it reminded me of Silence of the Lambs, but I wish it hadn't, because Clarice Starling was developed much better than Monroe's Lee Harker. She has pretty much the same expression on her face the whole film. Alicia Witt, though, has a great turn as her mother. Cage's Longlegs reminded me of Son of Sam.
