Austin Texas and general Texas question for the board

I have a business trip planned in October centered around a convention in Austin the week/weekend of Oct 12th-15th and we are staying in town until the Formula 1 race the following weekend (Oct 21-23). Any must see places, must eat restaurants, must do's and don'ts in the general vicinity? Also we will not be tied to Austin the days between the convention and the F1 race - so any state or national parks worth seeing while we have a few days on our hands would be great too - we are not opposed to staying a night or two out of town if need be to see things worth visiting, so anything of note does not necessarily have to be within the greater Austin area for us. Thank you in advance - neither myself nor my S/O have been to the state of Texas so we are open to ideas, preferably adventurous outdoor ideas.
