ding, ding, ding, correct!
This is considered one of the most, perhaps the most, lopsided trades in baseball history. Jim Fregosi had been a six time all star shortstop for the Angels but played in only 101 games over two seasons for the Mets, hitting for an underwhelming .232 average and five homers. Meanwhile NR pitched for eight seasons for the Angles, winning 138 games (37 more than Fregosi even played for the Mets). In order to “compensate” the Angels for having had to take Ryan instead of Gary Gentry (the pitcher that the Angels requested), the Mets threw in outfielder Leroy Stanton and two other prospects. Stanton hit 47 homers in five seasons with the Angels. Even if the trade had simply been Stanton for Fregosi and Ryan had remained with the Mets, the Angels would still have gotten the better of it.
