ding, ding, ding, correct!
Gene Shoemaker, Carolyn Shoemaker and David Levy discovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy-9. Levy first met the Shoemakers in 1988 when the famous couple was tracking a comet Levy had previously discovered. This initial meeting sparked a successful observing partnership that would eventually lead to their iconic discovery in 1993. Decades prior to the comet discovery, Gene Shoemaker had revived a theory that the moon’s craters were impact craters and not of volcanic origin, which was the prevailing theory at the time.
