My current understanding is Cowpens was critical
It prompted the Red Coat movement north, leading to Cornwallis's Pyrric win at Guildford Courthouse forced Cornwallis to leave the Carolinas for the 'safety' of Virginia, right into the might of Washington, who left engaging Clinton in NY. Adm. de Grasse was was there to blockade Cornwallis' escape. Washington's orders to Nathaniel Greene were to maintain his forces while Morgan was to harrass as he did at Cowpens, leading eventually to the outcome at Yorktown.
