case scenario here is likely that some lunatic acting alone decided to take a shot at a presidential candidate. The worst cases likely involve some sort of coordination amongst multiple people to either take out the candidate or to stage it to look like that was the goal. Of course it could also involve foreign countries looking to create more chaos in an already chaotic election cycle. And no matter what comes out as the official report there are going to be lots of people who don't believe it. So no matter what it's only going to cause even more discord in an already fractured country.
