People are a lot more fitness conscious today.

Oh, there are more obese people today than ever in our history, but there are also far more people who are fitness focused. Back in the old days before the "low fat" (Type II diabetes prescription) way of eating, people just lived their lives (work, family, sleep). You didn't see that many parents running or biking back then...
