Parts of the general path of Rt. 11 have also been used since Indian times

In colonial times, that road was called the Valley Pike, but before that era it was used for a very long period by natives (Monacans, Shawnee, Iroquois-related tribes, etc) as a foot path to hunting grounds and for general transport up and down the Shenandoah Valley. IIRC from some history I read, it was originally an animal path (buffalo, etc) that the natives also followed. Animals tend to pick the optimal path of least resistance when choosing comfy foot paths :-)
