Thankfully I had a great teacher for freshman calculus at VT. I remember sitting in his class and things all of a sudden making sense because he explained them clearly. I've come to realize that the world is full of smart people who comprehend advanced concepts, but very few of them have the ability to convey their knowledge in a way that the average person can understand. Being a good teacher is truly a rare gift, in my opinion.
