From the Roanoke Times, Engineered materials arresting system ...

...Such systems, known by the acronym EMAS (engineered materials arresting system), consist of crushable materials placed at the end of a runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The EMAS system in Roanoke, which is made of cellular concrete blocks, is at the northern end of the runway, which is 5,810 feet long. EMAS systems have been installed at 69 airports in the United States and have safely stopped 24 planes carrying 438 crew and passengers, according to the FAA. ** Edited by Coattail Hokie at 9/25/2025, 3:09:43 PM
