Are you a super-heavy data user (i.e. stream a lot of video)?
I'm on the $40/mo for AT&T prepaid, then with the multi-line and auto pay discounts, it's $60/mo for me and my daughter's service.
I have never bought a service contract for a mobile device. I've always used pre-paid services as there seem to be way fewer games since they know you can just leave whenever you want. But I don't think prepaid service works great if you are a super-heavy data user. I think I'm limited to 15GB a month, but that is fine for me. That handles probably an hour or more of streaming audio every day with no issue. I doubt I watch more than 10 minutes of video on my phone in a month without being on wi-fi.

For basic service and texting I keep a Tracfone flip phone in my vehicle.
