I have a thought on the F-35 failures, and what to do in the future.
I think what should have happened is to build a common suite of sensors, computers, etc., then put them into different airframes for each service depending on their requirements. The Navy, USMC aircraft need sturdy landing gear and a stronger airframe for CV use. If you need STOL capability, then put it that equipment into a STOL airframe.
Probably best to NOT have one airframe, and try to modify it to fit every need.

The A-10 was a brilliant invention! That's why it lasted so long.
