First of all, there was plenty of drek in the 80s also. You just don't hear it anymore because it was drek. You are hearing the greatest hits of the 80s, and you are comparing it in your mind to the baseline garbage that's on the air today and won't stand the test of time. The prolific use of hit oldies in commercials is because that's the age of the folks they are trying to sell stuff to.
Not to mention that the music that was popular during your more formative years is always going to be more appealing to you than stuff that has come out more recently.
30 years from now there will be plenty of todays hits being used for all of the same retro reasons, to appeal to today's children.
