That was my problem with every home gaming console after the Atari 2600
Too many damn buttons. Gimme one joystick and one or two buttons. Either that, or a gun-like object you can point at the screen and fire.
Defender was the first game that I just found overwhelming with too many buttons. Then all the Nintendo/Sega/Sony/Microsoft game consoles in the 35 years since then just keep getting more complicated.
