I think all cartoons do that...
You can have Lucy pulling away the football at the last moment to have Charlie fall on his butt* only so many times.
on the other hand, you get to a point where I think just seeing the same cartoon becomes a comfortable thing so the cartoons long outlive any new creativity but people still like it, a touchstone maybe. Of course, the Dilbert cartoons lampooned office politics, bosses etc. which I loved probably because it affirmed my belief that bosses were idiots but you can't work that material forever.
*In Charles Shultz's defense, he did a pretty good job of coming up with new characters and refreshing the humor, eg, Snoopy became the lead character for a long time.
