For me to go to a store to buy an item, I have to travel between 5 and 15 miles, depending on the item, for 90% of what I might need. As a guess, the average Amazon van carries maybe 200 packages and travels maybe 150 miles per day. That's less than 1 mi/package. Obviously, all of that varies based on population density and your distance from retail locations but general math says package delivery is more efficient in terms of resources
