ding, ding, ding, correct!
Eighteen P-38’s were dispatched from Henderson field on Guadalcanal to essentially assassinate the admiral, who was on a “well-publicized” inspection tour of forward bases. On April 18, 1943, Operation Vengeance took out the man who had planned the Attack on Pearl Harbor some 15 months earlier. The wreckage of the admiral's plane was found on Bougainville, a part of present day Papau New Guinea.
