During Calvin Coolidge's presidency, the federal government ran a budget surplus every year, reaching a peak of $635.8 million in the 1927 fiscal year. This was the largest surplus in the nation's history at that point. WIth a budget of ~$3.5 billion, a $635 million surplus was substantial (18%). “Silent Cal” took advantage of an overheated economy in the 1920’s, with the stock market crash of 1929 occurring just a few months after he left office.
