Clearly you're talking about your "net worth" going up more than...

...you were paid your final year working. You work, save, and invest your entire time in the workforce IOT (in order to) be able to enjoy your retirement while generating an income as large, if not larger than you enjoyed in your higher earning years. That's the American dream!
