Also, multiple species which each have distinctive flight/flash patterns. We commonly have 2 species (there are more) in VA. One makes a “J” pattern. Fireflies are important predators in food chain as larvae in the ground (aka glow worms). They control those grubs you find in your lawn. Of course, you lose them if you spray with pesticides.
