I wouldn't hike almost any part of the trail without at least two other
people and I would sleep with a weapon nearby. Not necessarily a gun, but an axe, bear stick or large knife. Unfortunately, the AT is infested with a large number of homeless folks especially near metropolitan areas like northern VA, MD and DC. Not all are dangerous but quite a few have mental health issues. One should be very weary and careful when taking on the Trail. The very things that make the trail so attractive also attracts individuals with bad intent.
