Have you ever gone into a liquor store and felt like Nicholas Cage in
"Leaving Las Vegas"?
I take my granddaughter to Key Largo on Fridays this summer for a gymnastics class that lasts 3 hours. So instead of driving back home, then driving back, I look for things to do to kill time. This trip, I brought along the chauffeur because, I'm told, I "need some nice(r) clothes", and there is a TJ Maxx, Burlington Coat Factory, and Beals there.
You don't need to stop me now, because I know you are not impressed. But this is the Keys. We are lucky to have that. And $16 dollar shorts? I'm good. I'm going to "ruin them" in a month anyway, wearing them fixing something.
So...like any normal husband, after an hour of that, I'm looking for the section where they sell chairs. 2 hours to go, and I'm taking a load off while she looks at sun dresses. We go to all three stores, then drop by a pricey liquor store to kill some more time. But there is a Publix where it is a pleasure to shop (and attached Publix liquor store) in the same shopping center, so we head over. As we enter the store, I am greeted by 10 cases of Buffalo Trace stacked up front. Now, my knowledge of bourbon is entirely gleaned by what the lounge has taught me. And I'm eyeballing that bourbon like I'm looking at a Babe Ruth card at a yard sale. A voice in my head is telling me that you Virginia fellas can only get that in a lottery or something. I'm not sure, though, so I ask the cashier, "Is it unusual for you guys to get this stuff?". And he says, "Yeah, we never have that". Huh. I pick up a bottle to see how it feels. The chauffeur sees my interest and tells me to get it. Well, OK. You don't have to ask me twice. She's encouraging me to get more, but I really don't like to splurge on myself. One is fine just to try it, see what the hoopla is about.
So we meander around and I come across Woodford Reserve on sale. But there is more! (the signs blare) Buy 2, get $10 off! "Maybe I should just get that", I say. "No, no, no", she says, "Get that TOO!" I'm feeling the bond of our 40+ year relationship strongly at this particular juncture, and I know what to do. "OK, OK, but YOU need to get some stuff. How about some Sambucca?". And it is precisely here, I believe, looking back, that we entered the "Idle hands are the Devil's playground" domain. I grab a cart and we press on. "Mmmm...Kahlua...Amaretto...haven't had that in a coffee in forever!", I say, egging her on. And so it went. Anyway...we are ready for the apocalypse, I guess.
