Woohoo! After much consternation and research...
I was finally able to get my Sony TV to connect to my Yamaha AV receiver through the ARC/eARC HDMI connections. I thought it would be as easy as connecting an HDMI cable to the ARC/eARC ports, but nooooooooo. You have to configure both devices to "shake hands." Once you have a successful connection, you select the TV audio out instead of the TV speakers.
Thankfully both owner's manuals are online.
