As far as the Eagle's Nest goes, when I was 5 or 6 and my Dad was stationed in Germany, we went to Berchtesgaden in my Dad's hopes that we could visit the Eagle's Nest. He wasn't in combat in Europe in WW2 but it was something to see. Putting this in context, it was not all that long after VE Day (1953 or so) and the site had not yet opened for tourism. We were at some place where our vantage point allowed us to SEE the compound but all I recall is wondering where all the eagles were. Instead, later that week we took a tour of Dachau.
