the quality of the alcohol can have an effect also

The cheaper stuff can hit harder and leave you feeling worse. Also, ingredients can impact the body differently. I know my wife feels completely different after drinking european wine (no/lighter hangover) vs US wine. I find that I can more easily sip a good whiskey and have less of it compared to mid/lower tier bottles. But I drink it neat so that I can just enjoy the differences between brands. If you are mixing it with anything then those mixers could also be impacting you. Good job on the progress and good luck on the journey. and yes, a lot of what you describe sounds like habits. Those can easily take 2-4 weeks (or more) to break and form new habits.
