I have a beaten-up maul that my grandfather made and used on his farm.

We used these with steel wedges to spit firewood. I used a similar one (he had several) many times. While in the woods (probably hunting) my grandfather would come across a relatively straight dogwood tree. Then he would later return to cut it off (3-4 feet above grade) and grub out the root ball and take it home. He would hand hewn the trunk into the handle and the root ball into the head of the maul. I've kept it because it's a symbol of how practical he lived. You need a tool? Then you make one, if possible. He also had an extra axe handle that he made, simply as a "standby" in case one was broken. Apparently, this is what he did on days when he couldn't get out in the field.
