Just that comment destroys the whole argument. I think Gretzky also has 1,200 more assists than Ovi over a 1,400 game career. That’s almost an assist a game higher. Ovi is a great goal scorer and I have no doubt he’ll pass Gretzky. But if you ask people who know hockey to rank their top 5 players Gretzky is on the list and Ovi is not. That could be that Gretzky fundamentally changed the way hockey was played. Bye bye goon days of the 70s. He was also the first player to bring the offense back around behind the goalie. His total points will likely never be eclipsed. And yes he had some open net goals, but he also was ahead in a lot more games based on his winning percentage. Had he played on a middling team like the caps he probably would have had even fewer empty netters than Ovi. But because he passed his team was better. I guess he should have shot more on the empty next when there was ten seconds or less on the clock. Again Ovi is a great goal scorer and I love the efforts his fans go to trying to discredit Gretzky, who at least knew it was time to hang it up rather than go on the ice and cherry pick in an effort to get an record.
