The A-10 was a brilliant invention! That's why it lasted so long.
I know the USAF tried to retire it before and replace it with F-16s, but the F-16 can't replace the A-10. The Army said they would take it, but the Air Force didn't want to lose the CAS mission to the Army, so they kept it in the inventory.
