Our family of 4 left Blacksburg at 5am...
Got into Urbana, OH by noon... visited some shops, then visited their Aviation Museum at the airport, which was amazing. Filled with WWII era airplanes and artifacts. They are fully restoring a B-17 there, and you can walk through their workshop and get right next to everything. Highly recommended if you are in the area. After all of that, we drove another 20 minutes north to a random field near a church I could on Goggle earth the day before.... so, just our family, on a grassy knoll with full view of the horizon for 360 degrees. I picked that spot because a pond was nearby and trees not far.... that way we could experience everything that happens without traffic, people, airplanes....
It was amazing. When totality happened, birds got quiet, frogs and crickets came out. The winds died and the air chilled quickly. The light all around us was indescribable. The sight of the sun's corona, and the solar flares of sparkling pink were overwhelming. Seriously a surprisingly emotional event. My wife has no idea what to expect, but she was overcome. We got to experience it for just under 4 minutes. Something our family will never forget.
After that, we packed up and drove back. Got home by 10pm. 730 miles round-trip. Totally worth it.
