I don't follow soccer, so this opinion is based on my casual observations

as a general sports fan. I think the US had a temporary first movers advantage with women's soccer. They were able to be successful early because other countries weren't really taking it seriously yet. But now that other countries with an actual soccer tradition ARE taking it seriously, the party's over for the US. And the women's team is going to become as irrelevant as the men's team.
