I used USB to 2.5 SSD cable to clone and Samsung data migration software

It's actually really easy once you know all the parts involved. One major hiccup I ran into was in-laws new laptop was *partially* encrypted by Bitlocker. I had to finish the encryption and then decrypt it for the cloning software to be able to read the original HDD. If you do the cloning first, then you have backup if something goes wrong with upgrade (on old HDD), but you'll have to do the upgrade twice.
