What a day yesterday, for three High Schools in the general area...

State Champions: Division 1 - Galax wins 7-6, on a last second 42 yard Field Goal, by a Freshman. The ball hit the crossbar, and flopped over. You have probably done the math already... yep. Galax was trailing 6-4. Two Safeties! The Essex Trojans scored an early TD to take a 6-0 lead, but the conversion failed. Win ugly if you have to, but, as Al Davis said... "Just WIN, baby!" Congratulations, Galax Maroon Tide! Division 2 - The Radford Bobcats win their first State Championship since 1972 and 1971. They completed a perfect season beating the Riverheads Gladiators, playing their first season in Division 2 after winning the last 7 (IIRC) Division 1 Championships, by a score of 39-21. Congratulations, Radford and Will Stewart! Division 3 - The Liberty Christian Bulldogs also wrapped up an undefeated campaign, downing the Lafayette Rams 28-14, after getting off to a 21-0 lead. Congrats, Liberty! Runner Up: Division 4 - In something of a shock, the Salem Spartans did NOT win the State Championship this year! They had trailed almost the whole game, but tied it very late with a TD and a 2 point conversion. Then, the unthinkable happens. The Phoebus Phantoms had the ball at their own 14, with seconds left in Regulation, and OT almost certain. Instead, they hit a bomb down the middle of the field, the receiver escaped a lone tackle attempt, and headed for the endzone, scoring with one second left for a 21-14 win, and a third straight State Championship for Phoebus! Salem finished with only two losses. The first loss, was their season opener at home against... Liberty Christian, by a score of... 21-14. A year of depressing bookend losses to State Champions, for a school with double digit Championships, starting in 1996. ** Edited by No_Limit_Hokie at 12/10/2023, 3:45:41 PM

Good for Salem to get a dose of humility. And Riverheads, also. **
