A great team. A big dog. See the OP (which is what I responded to).

So we agree that VT has virtually no chance at being a national champion or playoff regular, i.e. a great team/program or big dog. Being a perennial ACC contender won't really much to people other than ACC fans unless there is some drastic realignment in funding. Nevertheless I don't agree that VT can even become a perennial ACC contender. Occasional? Perhaps. But that means VT will be a top 3 or 4 program in the ACC - and I think, at best, VT can consistently #4 and more like <#4. There is no recent retrospective or prospective evidence that VT has the resources to be a consensus top 3 or 4 program in the ACC (as it currently exists). VT would need to leap over several programs to get there and those programs aren't going to lay down easily. Top 15 regular? No chance. That requires top 15 talent. And that requires money more than ever before.

I think we will see some teams with similar resources to VT
MaroonMark 09/06/24 01:29 AM ET
Been saying this for years. Short of a miracle benefactor, VT is stuck.**
marcbvtgm 09/04/24 05:36 PM ET
Money alone won't do it. Ask the bottom of the SEC and B1G...
Techsupport 09/05/24 10:26 AM ET
But you have zero chance without $$ - Deion or not. Ergo, VT has no chance.
marcbvtgm 09/05/24 10:48 AM ET
At what precisely?

To me a top 15 team is a 9-10 win program.

Can remember how one player named Michael Vick put VT at the top.**
Bburg Mac 09/05/24 08:34 AM ET
Vick would cost $2 million now**
VTGungHO 09/05/24 11:13 AM ET
Probably cost......

We absolutely can be top 12; have been as recently as 2010-11
hokiepro 09/04/24 01:46 PM ET
That's not recent in today's era. Things are moving blazingly fast.**
NokieHokie 09/05/24 11:54 AM ET
Were you around the last 30 years? Infrequent top 10 visits are realistic
Techsupport 09/04/24 01:43 PM ET
I would be surprised if any of our fans think a run in the playoffs
VT ChemE 1986 09/04/24 01:06 PM ET
I think VT can absolutely be a playoff team consistently
hokiedad25 09/05/24 10:01 AM ET
"Playoffs? PLAYOFFS??"
Zanderhokie 09/04/24 02:41 PM ET
If we are capped then that means more money won’t get us any results
HokieAl 09/04/24 11:32 AM ET
Maybe one day we’ll be able to chant “We’re #13!”**
Hardcore_Hokie 09/04/24 12:52 PM ET
Bingo on both.
Gobbler Guru 09/04/24 12:28 PM ET
Even though you are correct about the SEC not transforming those schools

Happy Dog 09/04/24 01:34 PM ET
I'm starting to agree with this take on VT sports**
GoFightingGobblers 09/04/24 12:39 PM ET
Think if some P2 school took 1/2 their FB money and NIL and spread it over
cricket77 09/04/24 11:46 AM ET
All that matters is football, period

I would be shocked if everyone does not understand this

I don't think most people care
Happy Dog 09/05/24 05:18 AM ET
There's a reason "sports fans" is a shorten version of the phrase "sports

Need to look to non-rev sports if you want a national title
Happy Dog 09/04/24 11:40 AM ET
IMO Clemson seemed to drop off after everyone started paying players w/ NIL
kingofcassell 09/04/24 11:30 AM ET
Until proven otherwise, I offer O/U as 4.5 for playoff selection

Lane has been raised. I vote no for razing. **
TomTurkey 09/04/24 11:36 AM ET
Corrected. I would rather not raze Lane Stadium…
GSOHokie01 09/04/24 12:00 PM ET
I'll give Pry 2 more seasons, but no money. SB and WBB for me. And St. Jude**
TomTurkey 09/04/24 12:13 PM ET
Maybe it being higher would help
Pylons 09/04/24 11:57 AM ET
I think VT has the resources and talent to be a top 25 to 30 team most
Hokie_Forester 09/04/24 10:55 AM ET
20 yrs ago VT had a competitive athletic dept. If we're not going to try
