Beamer may preferred to win 17-7, but having an offense capable of only
scoring 17 points doesn't help if the opposing offense is able to score 18+ points. Scoring a lot of points isn't the only characteristic of a high powered offense. Another characteristic that seems to be overlooked by people, including yourself, is a high powered offense can make a good defense people reactionary football instead of proactive football. What I mean is the defense is playing off its back foot, so the offense can control the tempo of the game instead of the other way around. The offense can still control the clock by dinking and dunking its way down the field. Spurrier had a few Florida teams achieve greatness because they dinked and dunked their way to a lot of wins that season. The Patriots with Brady were probably the master of it in the NFL.

I don't know if that is statistically true vs. it being more a perception.

Beamer's philosophy was control field position to win, not offense to win.
