ACC Championship and/or get in to the FBS Playoffs. There may even be the possibility they believe that if VT wants to even sniff a Playoff bid, then it MUST play in the ACC Championship. Since they are in the journalism business, their employer may be driven by clicks. If so, then they may make more of an effort in articles on schools that will generate more clicks which VT may not be considered one of those schools at the moment. I did find it odd too how the article just abruptly ended the conversation and it probably was a combination of things that led to that decision for whatever reason.
