Noticed that Jaydon Young is going to UNC!
I wonder how much PT he will get there. He wasn't that highly regarded out of high school. You would think that we could lock in a guy like that for longer if the contract had been written better and more intelligently. Does Whit EVER add any value? Lower tier schools are going to have to write retention clauses and buyouts. Mike Young is good at developing players. Consequently, that should be an edge where VT could create some value and close the gap with better-funded programs. Looks like another opportunity was missed.

I don't think most folks would see that as a missed opp.
Who knows what he could've developed into but I think the writing was on the wall with him. I never got the sense that he was a we vs. a me player. Could be totally off but body language said I think more of myself than I am. I'm surprised he went to Carolina where, like you, I think his minutes decrease. I would've expected him to go to a lower level to be the man.

After reading Vtox's reply, perhaps it wasn't relevant in this case. There
have been some headscratchers with retention and roster management. At first glance, it looks puzzling why a guy that was a contributor for us goes to UNC, where he would presumably be further down the bench. But apparently he loves UNC. I haven't seen a coherent roster strategy for football or basketball the past few years. Now that the rules are getting firmed up, hopefully someone at VT will realistically figure out what their niche is and what their space in the hierarchy is. If we are going to focus on development - which I wish we would, like we used to, then VT needs to carve out some income if players use us for a stepping stone. The schools we should copy are BYU, Boise, K State and Iowa State. Maybe BYU has bigger bucks than I realized. I see schools that competently reload and we do not. VT has a very solid community and following and somehow that is not being leveraged very well, in my opinion.

Would Whit carry most of the blame for that?

No we replaced him with better talent Avdalas and Bedford and kept 2 more
Valuable guys Shutt and Johnson. All four can play his position. He may have gone to UNC for less $$ than VT would have paid to keep him. UNC is his dream school. They got him for depth.

Exactly. We won't be missing the least efficient player on last year's team

He's like a home run hitter that strikes out a lot.
He'll hit a long 3 that makes you say "Hey, that kid can really shoot" as he misses his next 10 shots badly. A jewel of inconsistency.

Steve “Bye Bye” Baloni comes to mind with that baseball reference

He definitely won’t be taking ten three pointers in a game for UNC either.

He is where he wants to be, so I'm happy for him.
