They don’t want to learn something that many of them view as “stupid” (not my term) or antiquated (my term). They basically want to play street ball and take a lot of shots. Athleticism and quickness trump height and bulk these days. The game has changed. And Mike Young isn’t nearly the only guy still trying to run system. We need look no further than UVA and Tony Bennett. The ultimate system coach. Worked for a while. Now? Not so much. Still not sure how or why they got into the tourney, where they predictably lost the play-in game and looked ugly doing it (again). So…if Mike Young is willing to go out there and just get some terrific athletes (“dudes”) who just happen to play basketball, he has as good a chance as anyone of making the tourney in any given year. But he likes coachable guys and, to be honest, the vast majority of highly rated HS players these days are not all that coachable. They could be if they wanted to, they just don’t want to (there are, of course, exceptions). No one is getting 4 or 5 year players like Cattoor anymore. Some teams will need to do total rebuilds almost annually. This is the monster that NIL and ultimate free agency have created. So the real question is, will Mike Young adapt his coaching to better align with the current game? Bud Foster had to do it in 2004 but he was a bit younger than Mike Young is today. Gonna be an interesting offseason.
