Pedulla thoughts-- and his conundrum
First of all, Sean is the best player on our team. Hunter is right up there but he is not as critical for obvious reasons. Sean is our fearless alpha but in basketball terms can absolutely be a "selfish" player also. That is not a knock, he is just extremely confident and feels like he can get a bucket at any moment...something VT needs by the way. I really like him and CMY did a great eval to get him "and" retain him which we all know has been our coach's glaring weakness.
I think what most folks are missing (and I have pointed it out in the past) is the conundrum he faces on the court. Chris Coleman astutely pointed it out this morn in another thread... he does not have a lot to work with in overall team talent. IMO, Pedulla feels like he is the best option to go get a bucket and I do not disagree with him at all. Against the better teams, he presses even more-so and hence more TO's.
Here is a microcosm during the Wake game of the talent that CMY has assembled as his starting 5. At about the 18:10 min mark to start the 2nd half. We have Rechsteiner in the game (think of him as Pedulla for this exercise at the top of the key), Long is on the right wing and he just threw it into Kidd who quickly gets double teamed. On the left wing, Collins is literally being ignored by his defender while Long's defender has his eye on him a little but is focused on Kidd but he is also wide open. Hunter is on the 3 point line out from the elbow but guarded well enough. 2 of our 3 wings are wide open, Long and Collins. They both cant shoot or score worth a lick and Wake knows it (both are a combined 4/27 from 3 on the year). Kidd makes an unathletic move and flails up a crap shot. In this sequence the ball has moved well. Kidd does not pass it out from the post like he should bc who here is going to make a 3 point shot? No one and this is what Pedulla has to work with! A crappy roster that we should all be disappointed with in year 5 of CMY. He deserves our sympathy not our bashing!
Apologize for the long one.
