A zone defense doesn't "make" anyone do anything

It might take some time off the clock if you're nursing a lead, but playing zone in recreational basketball isn't the same as playing against college athletes. Mike Young's defense is specifically designed to encourage long range shots and always have help in gaps to discourage drives. If players are getting driven 1-on-1 then it's because the players off the ball aren't doing their job. If they aren't doing their job, what makes you think they would do their job better under a defense they practice much less? So the alternative then is to practice zone defense just as much as you practice your base man-to-man...which is equally as silly because all it does is make your man-to-man worse. Zone defense isn't some secret elixir that college athletes can't figure out. It's very easy to beat and get the shots you want from pretty much anywhere you want on the floor. You simply overload an area occupied by one person in that zone and play 2-on-1 or 3-on-2 as many times as possible. Willingly playing at a disadvantage is a horrible way to coach
