It doesn't have to be exactly structured like football divisions

in Europe, But I think it could very well work in a system where you have top teams who move up and bad teams move down. It would also create a need to destroy conferences. Nothing I'm saying will ever happen because of the money, obviously, but there are great disparities in the willingness of a Northwestern to spend on Football, and an Ohio State. Those two should not be in the same league. However, if Northwestern gets some new donors who decide they want to compete, they should then have to earn it by winning first. I strongly believe football should move to this. With roughly 120 teams, you set up 3 leagues of 4 divisions each (geographical would be best, IMO) and have each team play each other one time, then the other 3 games are available to play whoever (rivals, money-maker home game with lower leagues). Top 4 teams from each division have a 16-team playoff. Bowls are used for remaining teams and some bowls are for who is relegated and who is promoted. Can you imagine the importance of the Pop-Tarts bowl between VT and Rutgers this year if it meant the winner got to go to League 1 and got a $10k bonus for each winning player? I don't believe for American purposes, you can discount the pay directly on pro/releg, but the pool/income coming from TV deals/etc would be diminished based on your league. There are WAY too many details for me to think about and put into a post, but it *could* be a great system. However, the people with the money would never agree to it. We're stuck with this awful system for a while. Think about the top 40 schools in revenue compared to the next 40. There's generally a clear distinction between levels of play between #15 and #41, certainly #64. However, if you have a JMU who decides they want to pump money into their program, they should be able to then compete against better competition and potentially oust them from the higher leagues to earn more money. Again, a CBA would be involved that could structure this and the transfer portal would still be there, so if someone does drop from League 1 to League 2 and is unhappy with their pay, they can transfer to a better school.
