OK, I'll take the bait.

The second part of your statement on Mike Young is true. The first part? "Objectively phenomenal"? Please point to the "objective" facts justifying such a claim. The FACTS are that Young's career arc at VT is very similar to what he did at Wofford. Occasional good seasons, lots of mediocre ones, occasional bad seasons. Thus, high floor (he doesn't produce a lot of truly terrible teams) and low ceiling (not a lot of 20 win years, only 7 out of 23 seasons as a head coach, all but one of those at Wofford). His career winning percentage at Wofford is 55%, at VT 56%. That is not terrible, but it's definitely not "objectively phenomenal". And the larger point, which many of the PATTs on this board seemingly refuse to acknowledge, is that Young's problems with roster building and player retention predate any NIL. Coming into his VT tenure, the two primary concerns about Young were not X's and O's- they were around his ability to recruit a higher level of talent than what he was used to at the SoCon level. The revolving door of players over the past few seasons at VT, and the FACT that many of the players who have left (most NOT NIL related) are more talented than their replacements, has shown that those concerns about the newly-hired MY were valid. Young seems to be one of those coaches who does their best work coaching less talented teams (as evidenced by the very solid job he's doing this year). He also seems to struggle managing, developing, and coaching more talented (read: ACC level) players. I have no idea why that is, but their is zero doubt that a roster of currently active ex-Hokies would wipe the floor with the current VT hoops squad. Thus, the point. Giving more NIL money to ANY program can only help. So I have zero doubt that doing so for Mike Young at VT will help him attract a better caliber of player than we were involved with during last year's budget-constrained portal wars. However, I think far too many fans are using NIL as a catch-all, end-all excuse for why VT hoops is struggling to attract and retain talent. More NIL $$$ next year = comparative improvement from this year. But it will not fix the longer term issues that have caused Young's program at VT to enter a cycle of diminishing returns.

Take $$ from .500 team that supports all sports to sub .500 which doesn't?
marcbvtgm 02/28/25 08:31 PM ET
You miss the point. Fans are showing up consistently for a .500 team
hokiehill1117 03/02/25 09:51 AM ET
The .500 team has supported other sports (not basketball)

Not football, but I'd be fine with taking cash from that incredible 6-7

The football money is at about a 6-7 or 7-6 level.
