My experience is....

There are always a number of potential recruits that don't necessarily make it into the public eye. The assistant coaches each have their individual group of prospects they are recruiting. The Head Coach decides the priority for the most part of the cumulative, comprehensive list of possible targets. Some become public, many do not. In fact, I don't ever know of a year where all of the Tech targets became public. At least those years of course when I was close to the program. I am assuming in those years I was not closer to the program that the entire list still did not become public in those years either. In fact, without mentioning names, we once signed a player here who was liked by the HC before souring on that player a bit. That happens often as new names emerge closer to the top and other names fall down the list or even off the list for various reasons. His recruiting assistant was told to move on from that player. However this specific ass't coach continued recruiting the prospect on the down low because he felt very strongly about this player. At a later juncture the Head Coach saw the player again and he played very well and the Head Coach wanted to get involved again. You normally aren't going to be able to get involved again after dropping off a prospect. Since Tech never technically dropped off- even though the assistant was told to do so- it was easier to stay squarely in the mix, so to speak. Tech did eventually sign this particular player.
