Expanding the field makes the regular season (which already isn't the most compelling in sports) less interesting and important. There's that stat factoid put up next to coaches often ("Coach as led his team to the NCAA tournament 5 of 6 seasons"). It's currently an accomplishment to get into the field. It will be less so if the field is expanded.
