Mixing defenses by definition means you aren't going to play either

optimally. Anyone who can't admit that is an idiot. Now, knowing you can't play them both optimally you're left with the risk/reward: Risk: you play one or both poorly and the opponent takes advantage Reward: you confuse the opponent sufficiently that they can't take advantage. Guess what? Well coached teams don't get confused enough to make the non optimality worthwhile. Sure, the crappy 6th grade team coached by uncle Joe gets confused and can't score. And, hell, some Div 1 college teams aren't well-coached. So they can't score consistently. But any decent team already knows how to attack 2-3, 1-2-2 and 1-3-1 zones *before the season starts.* They aren't going to be somehow stymied or befuddled by more than a single shot clock once they see you switch. Only chumps will. And we can already beat most of the chumps. You can't name a coach who's won a NC in the last 25 years who consistently switches from man to zone, can you?

Cal scored 89 points. I know FSU was up big but they didn’t clear the bench

FSU is 94th in the nation in defensive efficiency...

FSU's defensive efficiency, good or bad is not, by itself...

Maybe they would be 125 if they never switched defenses.**

I’m a big CMY fan. One thing I don’t like is refusal to try to mix defenses
hokiepro 03/11/26 11:03 PM ET
My favorite too. Would run a 1-2-2 @ half court to trap ball @ sideline.**

Good post, the whole idea is kind of like what was laid at Stiney's feet

FSU might play themselves onto the bubble. Clearly been good/hot for weeks.**
