I think Bedford's ceiling and floor is the most fluid of anyone on the team at the moment (probably not in reality, if I had more information or saw the guys play every day like the staff does I think the answers would be clearer) There are some position battles that I dont think we've seen much of during MYs tenure. Rodney Rice would've forced an interesting one had he played...but alas Backup PG (Hammond, Bedford, Avdalas) I think on the outside it seems a given that Hammond is the guy in the backup role...and I would lean that way fairly heavy too. But what exactly is the minutes breakdown? Is the staff serious about Avdalas at PG? How much time do you give him there? Wing starter (Bedford, Schutt, Johnson) Avdalas is a no-brainer. But who is the other starter? Probably doesnt matter as much and could be matchup-dependent but it'll determine the shakeout of minutes for a good number of players. Do you go with offense in Schutt? Defense in Johnson? Or experience in Bedford? Wing backup (Schutt, Bedford, Johnson, Pasha) Whoever loses the above battle will still battle it out for minutes on the wing. Johnson can play some minutes at the 4, and Bedford can play some PG minutes, so Schutt stands the most to lose here if he doesnt win the starter job. Do you play Pasha off the ball with Hammond in the game? Where do those minutes come from? Backup 4 Lawal is the starter at the 4 spot. He will also play spot minutes at the 5. There isn't anyone specifically on the roster who jumps out as a backup 4. Hamsberry would be ideal, but hes gonna be needed at the 5 and will play the bulk of his minutes there. So do you do backup 4 by committee? Avdalas, in my mind, is best suited here...hes a matchup nightmare at the spot. But does he see it that way? His path to NBA isn't at the 4 spot, so were there discussions contingent on him NOT being a 4 prior to committing to VT (much like Lawal as a 5)? Johnson will get spot minutes at the 4 depending on matchups and team needs. Backup center Hansberry is the guy. I could see him leading the team in minutes played depending how the staff divides the minutes at 4. This all depends on how ready Gurdak is and how well Dorn adapts to the college game. If either of them transition well, then Hansberry could come in just a hair under 30 min. If both of them transition well...well...it'll be a great year in Blacksburg. I could see Bedford getting as little as 10 min/game if all the battles shake out against him. I could also see him getting 25 min/game from various roles (i.e. 5 from PG, 10 from one wing and 10 from the other). Anything in between is also possible. A coaching friend of mine saw a workout earlier in the summer (before Dorn and Avdalas arrived) and said Bedford might be VTs best player. Could've been a good day, could be a breakout year...who knows? But I think him moreso than anyone else has a lot of volatility (and versatility) in what his role could be. I know we dont talk about Bruno here...but its a good problem to have for inevitable absences due to injury, suspension, sickness and gambling
