Athletics isn't why applications grow. Yes, they help, but they have

continued to grow during the years since 2011 with an average at best FB team. It just doesn't hold true that athletics drive applications. With an enrollment of 30K+ with trying to get to 50k, likely only a small % apply or make their choice based upon athletics. And would hope for the student's person they wouldn't. Are you really choosing a college (and therefore a launching pad for your career) based upon the football team you don't even participate in? That would make zero sense. Athletics is absolutely a benefit, but it is part of marketing the university along with many other things - majors, quality of professors, campus life, climate, etc.
