A great example is FAU

But they also have the beaches of Boca Raton to keep talent around And yes...retention is key in the system I outlined. But still very difficult. And as a coach you walk the line of being honest fully with your players (like telling Bamisile he wouldn't be looking at immediate playing time) or trying to tell them what they want to hear or to be patient in order to keep them around. It takes a special kind of player to develop in one place when you aren't seeing the immediate returns. The focus should always be identifying players in HS (or with 3+ yrs of eligibility) who have a high ceiling and high IQ to keep their floor higher than rock bottom. Then you should fill the rest of your roster fixing holes with transfers. But the transfers should never be the focal point of the program. They're always going to be behind. Always. Aluma and Murphy were obvious exceptions because they already knew the system. But Mutts is the closest to being ready from the jump. All the others needed a bunch of time. How do you retain players? You have to be honest with them. Have to. But like I said above sometimes that comes with them making their own choices they deem best for them given the honest information you provide to them. From all accounts I haven't seen a single instance where Mike Young hasn't been honest with each of his players. Even if that meant losing them (like Isiah Wilkins, Jalen Cone and Joe Bamisile). So what's the fix? I don't really know. Build positive relationships and identify the right type of people who want to stick around for those relationships and not the people who need the frills. Just keep in mind those players aren't usually highly ranked, nor do they have the highest ceilings.

VTCALS72 02/05/24 08:16 PM ET

BAMAHOKIE 02/05/24 06:08 PM ET

6thStreetHokie 02/05/24 05:08 PM ET
$250,000 per player for at least 3-4 players, then at least $75,000-150,000
